Deba Klima: A Fourth Season strengthening the climate dialogue

logo

Deba Klima makes its much-anticipated return with a fourth season focused on dialogue, information, and collective action. In this new edition, the competition once again gives young people a voice. Students from 16 secondary schools across the island will come together to debate and propose ideas in response to the major climate and environmental challenges threatening Mauritius and the planet. These debates will be broadcast from this Saturday, 9 May, on MBC 1 and MBC Sat, starting at 8:30 p.m. Deba Klima is a joint initiative of MCB and the Rajiv Gandhi Science Centre (RGSC), in collaboration with Dr. François Gemenne, specialist in environmental geopolitics and migration.

54 Schools Registered

Following three impactful editions, Deba Klima continues to generate strong interest among young people. 54 secondary schools across the island responded to the call by submitting videos highlighting their reflections and proposed solutions to climate change challenges. After a rigorous selection process, 16 schools were shortlisted and will advance to the round of sixteen.

Bold topics to raise awareness

Among the strong themes featured in this fourth edition are: « Bann fam pli vilnerab ki bann zom fas a bann linpakt klimatik » or « Zenerasion klima li pa existe sa ».These bold, sometimes provocative topics are central to raising awareness and encouraging critical thinking around climate issues. Two schools will face off on a single theme, with one defending the motion and the other opposing it. St Joseph College will compete against Royal College Curepipe, while John Kennedy College will face Sir Leckraz Teelock State Secondary School. Defending champions La Confiance College will take on Newton College. Students from Phoenix State Secondary School will debate against Imperial College, while Lorette of Mahébourg will go head-to-head with Quartier Militaire State Secondary School. Notre-Dame College will compete against Hindu Girls College, GMD Atchia State Secondary School against Dr James Burty David College, and MGSSS of Solferino against St-Esprit College.

All debates will be moderated by La Nikita, host of Deba Klima since its very first edition.
