The MCB Rodrigues Scholarship has made four new beneficiaries this year. They are: Anne Cheyane Garine Philippe from Rodrigues College; Ryan Burny Dorestan; Iréné Oliver Agathe; and Ashlina Bernard, all three from Le Chou College, aged between 19 and 20. The official scholarship award ceremony took place on Thursday, June 11, at the Tekoma Hotel in Rodrigues.

Addressing the needs of Rodrigues

Faced with growing skills needs in Rodrigues, the choice of studies is a strategic lever to prepare a qualified workforce and strengthen the development of the small island. Aware of this and committed to the growth and well-being of the younger generation, Anne Cheyane Garine Philippe, the eldest of five siblings, has decided to study psychology at the University of Mauritius. She aims to specialize in child development, convinced that “this will bring greater awareness of the importance of mental health in Rodrigues, and by targeting the most vulnerable, I will help them better cope with societal challenges.” Ryan Burny Dorestan, passionate about mathematics and physics, has chosen to pursue electrical engineering studies at the Université des Mascareignes. The youngest of the scholarship recipients hopes to address the shortage of electrical engineers in Rodrigues: “I will be able to fill this gap and work hard to contribute to the economy of Rodrigues.”

26 editions and 51 scholarship recipients

For the past 26 years, MCB Rodrigues Scholarship has been rewarding students of Rodrigues origin residing on the island. The awarding of this scholarship is based on several criteria, including coming from a low-income family and having chosen a field of study likely to contribute to the development of Rodrigues upon completion of the course. This scholarship, granted by the MCB Forward Foundation, covers university fees and airfare, an initial allowance of Rs 25,000 per recipient to help cover expenses such as school materials and transport, and a monthly allowance of Rs 15,000 paid until the end of studies.
