Krishen Patten and MCB’s bold vision for wealth beyond borders

  • For Krishen Patten, whose career has taken him across the worlds of risk, investment and banking, leadership begins with understanding complexity. His appointment as Head of Private Wealth Management (International) brings that perspective to a business poised for its next phase of growth.
  • MCB's ambition is clear: to deepen its international wealth management presence by combining the insight that comes from being close to markets with the reach of a growing regional network.
  • Success, however, will depend on more than scale. It will be driven by collaboration, bringing together specialists across Private Wealth Management, Corporate & Investment Banking and Financial Markets to deliver a more connected, more sophisticated and ultimately more human client experience.

For much of his career, Krishen Patten has been tasked with preparing for what might go wrong. Whether on trading floors in London, inside a sovereign wealth fund in Abu Dhabi or closer to home in Mauritius's financial sector, his professional life has revolved around understanding risk, weighing uncertainty and making decisions in environments where the stakes are often high. It is a perspective that has shaped the way he sees business, leadership and growth.

Now, as MCB's newly appointed Head of Private Wealth Management (International), Krishen Patten finds himself stepping into a role that is less about managing downside risk and more about helping clients navigate opportunity. Yet the disciplines that have defined his career remain central to how he intends to lead.

The appointment comes at a significant moment for the Group. As MCB pursues its Vision 2030 ambitions, wealth management is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting growth across Africa and international markets. Krishen Patten arrives with nearly two decades of experience spanning risk management, investments and banking, bringing a combination of analytical rigour and international exposure to a business that is looking outward.

Since joining MCB in 2021 as Head of Financial Risk, he has worked across some of the Bank's most strategically important areas, overseeing market and credit risk, credit modelling and country risk. Before that, his career took him through institutions including Goldman Sachs, the Abu Dhabi Investment Council and AXYS Investment Partners. The common thread has been an ability to move between different parts of the financial ecosystem while maintaining a long-term view of value creation.

In his new position, Krishen Patten will oversee both Private Banking International and External Asset Management teams, that serve clients not only from Mauritius but also through MCB's international hubs in Dubai, Lagos, Johannesburg and Nairobi. Together, they form a key component of the Group's international ambitions, supporting high-net-worth individuals and external asset managers through a broad range of banking, financing and investment services.

Yet when Krishen Patten speaks about the future, he is less focused on products than on expertise.

The wealth management industry, he believes, is entering a period where specialisation will increasingly define success. Client expectations are evolving, markets are becoming more complex and institutions must continually deepen their capabilities if they are to remain relevant. For MCB, that means staying close to clients while developing solutions that reflect the realities of African and international markets rather than relying on one-size-fits-all approaches.

Technology, too, is reshaping the landscape. Digital tools and artificial intelligence are changing how financial institutions operate, creating opportunities to improve efficiency, enhance decision-making and strengthen the client experience. But Krishen Patten is equally conscious that technology alone will not determine success. Talent, he argues, remains the defining factor. Attracting, developing and retaining people with the right expertise will be essential if the business is to sustain long-term growth.

Perhaps unsurprisingly for someone whose career has spanned multiple disciplines, Krishen Patten sees collaboration as one of MCB's greatest competitive advantages.

Rather than viewing Private Wealth Management in isolation, he points to the natural connections that exist across the Group. Corporate clients often have founders, shareholders and executives whose personal wealth management needs extend beyond their business interests. Likewise, private banking clients frequently maintain corporate relationships that require broader banking support. Financial Markets, meanwhile, plays an important role in delivering the investment and transactional solutions that underpin those relationships. Bringing these capabilities together, he believes, creates a more seamless experience for clients and a stronger proposition for the Group as a whole.

It is a philosophy rooted in experience. Having spent years balancing risk against opportunity, Krishen Patten understands that sustainable growth rarely comes from isolated decisions. It emerges from connections: between people, businesses, markets and ideas.

As MCB continues its Vision 2030 journey, his priorities are clear. Strengthen expertise. Empower teams. Expand into new markets. Stay close to clients. And build on the foundations already established across Private Banking International and External Asset Management.
